Course Description:

In this course the student will learn advanced concepts and techniques with the purpose of creating elaborate and visually appealing websites. Some of the main topics that will be covered are geared towards a multidisciplinary approach to web design that does not revolve only around software instruction. The student will learn about user centered web design, graphic user interface customization, internet ethics and copyright issues for the web as well as a review of basic color, layout and typography theory. Some HTML, JavaScript and CGI concepts will be demonstrated so the students can incorporate some basic interactivity to their projects. The course is taught using Macromedia Dreamweaver®, Adobe Photoshop and Imageready. Macromedia Flash® technology will be emphasized to create animations and interactivity for the projects.

Lectures:

1. Inroduction, course overview. Dreamweaver Review, What’s new in MX?. Defining sites, file management and basic functionality.
2. Resolution, scalability, bit-depth and color management.
3. Three ways of treating text: HTML, graphics and Flash. Advanced Formatting and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
4. Asset management in Dreamweaver. Streamlining your work.
Library items and the creation of Templates in Dreamweaver.
5. Frames. What they are, what they do and why you should be careful when you use them.
6. Pop-up windows and other ways of displaying menus and graphics. Basic JavaScript for non-programmers.
7. Forms. What they are, how to make them and how to process form information. Basic CGI.
8. Photoshop 7.0 for the web. Tips and tricks, file optimization and compression. Imageready slicing. Animated Gifs.
9. Advanced Graphic User Interface Design (GUI). The importance of User-centered Web Design.
10. Embedding various media into your HTML document.
11. Layout View in Dreamweaver. Working from Templates and creating free-form tables.
12. Search engine registration, site optimization for listing and promoting your site. Metatags and registration services.
13. Copyright issues in the digital world. Fair Use of materials, myths about using other people's work.
14. Internet Accessibility Issues. Section 508 and WC3 Guidelines. Making your pages accessible to people with disabilities.
15. Layers in Dreamweaver. What is DHTML, XML, ASP? Just an overview.
16. Browser cross-browser and backward-browser compatibility and cross-platform design.
