Course Description:

The evolution and role of multimedia and relevant technology in the making of our culture. What is multimedia? This course will go into the history and development of this discipline. The student will learn about new technologies, digital copyright issues, industry trends, job niches, content creation, project planning and the creative process. The class will also deal with the importance of graphic design in the creation of multimedia and the and the new artistic trends that take advantage of different tools and media. A field trip and guest speakers from different relevant industries will complement the curriculum.

2 absences = ½ grade drop
3 absences = 1 full grade drop

Assignments: 40%
Presentations: 10%
Class Participation: 10%
Midterm: 15%

Lectures:

1. Class Introduction, course overview
What is Multimedia? Brief History and Common Misconceptions.
2. Relevant Multimedia Industries. Silicon Valley and beyond.
3. The Importance of Basic Training in Key Disciplines. Basic Art courses, low level programming, Graphic Design theory, video, audio, photography, writing. Teaching software vs. teaching core concepts.
4. Interfacing and Usability. What is User Centered design? Flowcharting and trees. Demographics and user psychology.
5. The Job Market. Where to look, how to look, how to present yourself. Salaries and other technicalities. Interviewing and buzzwords. Continuing studies and actualization.
6. Importance of Portfolio and Resume creation. Resume Workshop. Portfolio Workshop.
7. New Technology and Software advances. Tools of the trade and equipment. The Internet and accessibility.
8. The bigger picture. How the world is evolving in the age of information and technology.
9. Where does Art come into the picture? Aesthetics, design and the creative process. Digitalism - a new artistic period in the works…
10. Project Plan Development – The art of achieving an organized process from the beginning to the end of your project.
11. Copyright issues and Internet Ethics. The Digital Millennium Act.
12. Accessibility issues - Section 508 and WC3 Guidelines
13. Guest Speakers from one or several of the following disciplines (specifics to be announced at a later date): video game production, digital art and 3D modeling, desktop publishing, teaching, programming, art.
