Inside Photoshop 7 Book

Course Description:
The objective of this course is to learn and explore advanced techniques using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and learn to apply them for enhancing and expanding traditional artistic media. This course is designed as a continuation of Digital Imaging I ART-376 and thus basic digital imaging skills are required (file formats, scanning, document and file administration). Also, it is a prerequisite for this class to have basic knowledge of Photoshop.

Supplies:

-Lab Fee (payable upon registration)

-1 Zip disk (250 or 100 mb) formated for Windows (the Macintosh will read Windows formatted disks, but not the reverse!)

The lab on campus (13-211) will be open during the week for you to work on assignments, please check with posted hours in lab. At least Two by arrangement lab hours are required per week for this course.

Lectures:

1. Introduction, course overview. Review of assignments and ideas for the class. What's new in Photoshop 7.0? Photoshop Review. Toolbars and basic functionality.
2. The importance of Typography in Design. Type as text, type as art? New Vector capabilities of Photoshop 7.0. Text special effects, metal, plastic, fire, ice, glass.
3. Photoshop Artistic Filters, third party plug-in filters.
4. Layers and Layer Styles. Layer blending effects. Photoshop WOW book companion CD review.
5. Photo retouching and fixing. Curves, levels, color channel correction, and other useful filters, the channel mixer and other coloring techniques.
6. Photoshop Collage Techniques. Channels, masks, clipping paths. Extract command, feathering edges, selections and alpha channels.
7. Creating Textures in Photoshop. The Lighting Effects Filter. Working with seamless patterns and the pattern library. Working with brushes.
8. Working with Gradients.
9. Vectors in Photoshop. The power of the pen tool and paths.
10. Class Exercise-"Day of the Dead".
11. Copyright issues in the digital world. Fair Use of materials, myths about using other people's work.
12. Photoshop and the WEB. Save For The Web option, image compression and Animated Gifs. Principles of Graphic User Interface Design (GUI). ImageReady and Photoshop.
13. Actions in Photoshop. Batch Processing, contact sheets and automated Web Gallery features.
14. Preparing Images for Print. RGB-CMYK in detail. Working with large files.
